📝 From Indivisible Española:
Indivisible Española requested the Board of Rio Arriba County to enact a moratorium against data centers and to permanently ban uranium mining [last week]. They passed a resolution and will revisit it to strengthen it next month. Two of us will meet with the county planning and zoning director to propose an 18 month moratorium through ordinance to insure he has time to put in place regulations in the Comprehensive Plan.
A member of Indivisible Española met informally with the county assessor who has agreed to ban mining equipment on county roads. An ordinance against uranium mining will likely not be effective because the proposed site is on federal land and the 1847 mining law supersedes the county's authority. We also briefly discussed that if this company rolls in in March as threatened, we will gather together some of our members, most of whom are retirement age, and a bunch of walkers, wheelchairs and other equipment that make us look feeble and chain ourselves to their equipment, forcing them to remove us on camera.
