Oversee the General Election with Land of Action
You and your grassroots progressive group should get involved with Land of Action Election Watching.
This November, we all have to do our part to keep the general election free and fair. Land of Action is ready to assist local grassroots progressive groups and their members to be at the polls for election oversight and voter education and support. We registered with the New Mexico Secretary of State to be an Election Related Organization. This means we can enroll individuals to be Election Watchers. We can work with groups and teams throughout the entire state to get them set up to be at the polls. By enrolling to do Election Watching through Land of Action, groups and teams can be inside the polls, keep an eye out, and report problems or irregularities to appropriate authorities. Groups and individuals can also be outside the polls, at a lawful distance, to provide voter education and support.
We'll help groups get organized, make sure their members understand what they have to do to be Election Watchers allowed into the polls, and provide materials groups can use for voter support and education outside the polls at a lawful distance. If you or your group are interested, read this and contact founder@landofaction.org with an expression of interest. Make sure to include your name, your group if you are in one, and where in New Mexico you are located.
A deeper dive on what Election Watching is
A free election means nobody fears voting. No one is intimidated at the polls. A fair election means that regular procedures and New Mexico state laws are followed. There's no interference with state and local election administration by either the federal government or by rogue individuals. Rule of law is respected
Accomplishing these outcomes requires election oversight. New Mexico law creates three roles to do this: Election Watcher, Election Challenger, and Election Observer. All three of the legally recognized roles – Election Watcher, Election Challenger, and Election Observer – are strictly regulated by the state of New Mexico. To perform any of these roles, individuals must go through an Election Related Organization (ERO) registered with the New Mexico Secretary of State. You may not self-appoint.
Serving as an Election Watcher is different than being an Election Challenger, who is somebody who volunteers to be at the polls through a political party, such as the Democratic Party of New Mexico. Election Watching is also different than Election Observing. Election Observers work through national and international human rights and academic organizations, such as Common Cause, Observe New Mexico Vote, and university and college researchers. Election Observers play a non-interventionist role; they document but do not report problems or issues in real time.
Election Watching is the most appropriate role for those who want to engage in active, non-partisan election protection at the polls.

The November 2026 general election is a vital chance for New Mexicans to strengthen American democracy. The Free and Fair Elections NM 2026 Campaign (FFE NM26) is mobilizing grassroots progressive groups and organizations throughout New Mexico to seize the moment. The central objective: massive voter turnout to the New Mexico polls for a free and fair election. FFE NM26 is undertaking two projects to achieve this goal.
- A toolkit of resources local organizations and groups in New Mexico can use t**o promote turnout and to educate and support voters**. One size does not fit every place in New Mexico, so the toolkit is jumping off point. Local groups can and should adapt it to what will work in their communities. The toolkit will be available in early September. In the meantime, FFE NM26 has online a working repository of resources. PDFs are also available.
- A plan to be ready to come together after Election Day for You Voted, Now Shout It public assembly events across New Mexico. We hope to be celebrating free and fair elections in our state and across the country. We may be protesting if elections have not been conducted freely and fairly. Whatever the news, FFE NM26 is supporting local New Mexican progressive groups across the state to get ready to respond together, publicly and peacefully.
