Free and Fair Elections NM 2026 Campaign

Previously, we announced the Free and Fair Elections NM 2026 Campaign.
Now, we want to tell you a bit more about our partner in this effort, Rural Indivisible New Mexico (RINM).
Dimid Hayes initiated RINM, a network of rural Indivisible groups from across New Mexico. Meeting twice a month, members from these groups share information, work on organizational development skills, and provide each other with general support. A subset of RINM members are working on the Free and Fair Elections NM 2026 campaign, along with folks from Land of Action. The collaboration aims for massive voter turnout for this fall's general elections in New Mexico.

Jemez Area Indivisible loves being part of RINM. It's kind of lonely running a tiny little group like ours. Knowing there are other tiny groups out there, and what they're doing, how they handle the exposure, the sometimes negative and dangerous responses, is comforting and inspiring. A recent transplant from Chicago, I am enchanted and delighted by my sweet little village, but deciding how to interact and approach neighbors who might be Maga has been confusing at times. RINM has given me courage to fly my freak flag with love and pride. – Dot R.
I appreciate RINM because I lead a small group of Indivisible-ers who still struggle with where they want to plug in. I sometimes find myself a "leader" with no team. RINM gives me the chance to see what other rural groups are doing and get ideas that may be the spark that unites and moves us forward. The Free and Fair Elections NM 2026 Campaign will assist local New Mexico grassroots organizations provide voter education and support and, via Land of Action, will offer an opportunity for grassroots progressive groups, and their participants, to get involved with election protection by becoming election watchers. Silver City Indivisible's Call to Action: Congressional Oversight of ICE in New Mexico
Silver City Indivisible is already conducting a letter writing campaign to Representatives Gabe Vasquez and Melanie Stansbury, to urge New Mexico's Members of Congress to make oversight visits to ICE Detention Camps in New Mexico. Join in! Learn how below.
You can also have your groups organize letter campaigns to Senator Martin Heinrich, Senator Ben Ray Lujan, or – if you are in Northern New New Mexico – to Representative Teresa Leger Fernández.
đź“Ł A Call to Action from Silver City Indivisible
With the news this past week of two more ICE murders in the streets as well as the 22nd death in immigrant detention this year on Tuesday, we must demand Congressional oversight at NM detention camps.
The Department of Homeland Security has slashed most of the staff at the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties and gotten rid of the Office of the Immigrant Detention Ombudsman, leaving little to no internal oversight in immigrant detention camps. External oversight is all we have left to hold the prison profiteers and ICE to account.
Please join us in emailing Reps. Vasquez and Stansbury, requesting that they make oversight visits to these facilities when they are back in NM in August. We can round up people to stand with them, if need be.
We have three types of email/letter "templates", written by members of the Silver City Immigration Justice working group: 1. long and eloquent, 2. medium-length that will fit in the online email forms, and 3. short, sweet, and to the point. You can refer to them to get a gist of the request. Please take the time to email and call. Numbers matter. Spread the word. Those who are trapped in cages will appreciate your time.
